Want Michelle Obama Arms? There's A Surgery For That

I’m pretty sure Michelle Obama worked hard for her arms. They’re toned and sculpted without an ounce of fat hanging from them. Lucky her.  Not that my arms in horrible shape, they’re just not Michelle Obama arms, and they probably will never look like hers. But am I going to rush out and pay thousands on plastic surgery? I think not, but that doesn’t mean other women aren’t opposed to doing  it.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released its latest cosmetic and reconstructive surgery statistics on Monday.

Many of the trends were familiar.  In all, the group reported, Americans underwent 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries, including face-lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty; 13 million minimally invasive procedures (think Botox injections) and 5.6 million reconstructive procedures (including tumor removal and scar revision).  People in the U.S. spent $11 billion on the cosmetic procedures alone.

The society decided to highlight one surgery in particular that has risen in its popularity. In 2012, 15,457 patients, 98% of them women, spent a total of $61 million to have liposuction on their arms, or what’s known as a brachioplasty (a surgery that involves making an incision from the armpit to the elbow, usually along the back of the arm, to remove excess skin).  The number of procedures was up 4,378% since 2000, when only about 300 women opted for it, the group reported.

In a statement, the ASPS said that doctors didn’t point to a single reason for the increase, but took note of poll data indicating that women “are paying closer attention to the arms of female celebrities” including Jennifer Aniston,Demi Moore and Kelly Ripa. The most-admired arms of all? Those of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Most plastic surgeons will try to tell patients that diet and exercise should be a part of their daily regimen  but if you’re interested in dropping about $4k for surgery and end up with a possible scar for life, those same surgeons will gladly pull out their scalpel.

Michelle Obama, Shonda Rhimes, Valerie Jarret & Beyoncé Named in TIME 100 Influential List

From booty popping Beyoncé, to Michelle Obama, and Valerie Jarrett, Time’s 100 Influential list definitely runs amok with celebrities, humanitarians and notable politicians. Michelle Obama was placed in the “icon” category, along with Beyoncé and a few others I’ll silently question (Lena Dunham, Justin Timberlake, Kate Middleton).  Maya Angelou wrote about the first lady and her campaign to end childhood obesity. “She considers all children her responsibility: black white, pretty or plain, all the children,” said Angelou. Angelou also went on to speak about Obama’s personality, “she has remained herself, with her grace, her gentleness and her sense of humor.”

Beyoncé was praised by The Great Gatsby director, Baz Luhrmann. He referred to her as the “air-apparent diva of the USA—the reigning national voice.” He also made mention of her humility and her strong family ties.

Other African-Americans that appear on the list include:  Barack Obama, Frank Ocean, Valerie Jarrett, LeBron James, Shonda Rhimes, Miguel and California attorney general Kamala Harris. Jay-Z appears on the cover and is written about by New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. Other writers include Stevie Wonder on Justin Timberlake, Oprah Winfrey on Shonda Rhimes, John Legend on Frank Ocean and Maya Angelou on Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama Makes The Commencement Rounds

May is commencement time, and Michelle Obama is going to be a busy woman.  The first lady’s commencement schedule includes stops in Kentucky, Maryland and Tennessee.

The White House announced Thursday that Mrs. Obama will address graduates at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond on May 11 and at Bowie State University in Bowie, Md., on May 17. She’s also speaking to graduating high school seniors at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet School in Nashville, Tenn., on May 18.

Eastern Kentucky was chosen for its commitment to veterans’ education. The MLK magnet school recently opened a community supported wellness center and students tend to a community garden. Veterans and health and wellness are causes of the first lady. The magnet school has also been recognized for its curriculum and high graduation rate. And Bowie State is a historically black college.

Here’s a flashback of Michelle Obama’s 2011 commencement speech at Spelman College:

  • Michelle Obama Talks About Youth Violence In Chicago

Michelle Obama Talks About Youth Violence In ChicagoWhile speaking in Chicago at a conference on youth violence this week, Michelle Obama compared  herself to Hadiya Pendleton, the honor student from her hometown who was shot to death a week after performing as a majorette in the presidential inaugural parade.

“Hadiya Pendleton was me and I was her,” Mrs. Obama said. “But I got to grow up and go to Princeton and Harvard Law School and have a career and a family and the most blessed life I could ever imagine.”

Mrs. Obama said the only difference between herself and the young people killed on the Chicago streets is that she had a few more advantages — involved adults, good schools, a supportive community and a safe neighborhood.

“That was the difference between growing up and becoming a lawyer, a mother and first lady of the United States and being shot dead at the age of 15,” Mrs. Obama said.

Mrs. Obama also spoke of gun proposals that the president is trying to get passed, but made sure to mention that in order to reduce the murders in Chicago it will require an intensive effort by community leaders.

“Right now, my husband is fighting as hard as he can and engaging as many people as he can to pass common sense reforms to protect our children from gun violence,” Mrs. Obama said to applause. “And these reforms deserve a vote in Congress.”

Brits Crown Michelle Obama Queen Of Fashion

On the heels of making her second appearance on the cover of Vogue, Michelle Obama has another fashion accomplishment bestowed upon her. Britain’s Sunday Times Style Magazine recently crowned the Flotus as “fashion royalty”, and ranked Obama on the top of their best dressed list.

As part of the magazine’s promotion, an ad was released featuring a profile of Obama wearing a crown on a British first-class postage stamp, reminiscent of the Queen of England.

“I always say that women should wear whatever makes them feel good about themselves,” is what Michelle told Vogue. “That’s what I always try to do.”

Michelle Obama will grace the cover of Vogue, for a second time.  For the past 10 years, Vogue’s April edition has been its “Shape” issue, focusing on “the beauty and well-being of women’s bodies.” With the FLOTUS’ “Let’s Move!” initiative, it’s quite apropos for her to grace the April cover.

Michelle Obama’s first Vogue cover was in March 2009 (pictured above). She wore a pink dress designed by Jason Wu and was photographed by Annie Leibovitz. She first appeared in the magazine in 2005, when her husband was a U.S. senator from Illinois. A profile of her appeared in the September 2006 issue with an accompanying portrait by Leibovitz.

In the March 2009 issue of Vogue, Andre Leon Talley wrote the cover story, and Michelle spoke about her upbringing on the South Side of Chicago and how she plans on raising her daughters:

She doesn’t come from a culture of exclusivity, and she doesn’t appreciate a “members only” attitude. “We like to joke that the South Side of Chicago is our Kennebunkport,” she says. She’ll be guided by another lesson of her upbringing: “We learned in our household that there was nothing you couldn’t talk about and that you found humor in even some of the toughest times. I want to bring that spirit of warmth, openness and stability to my task.”

Talley also wrote about Michelle’s signature style:

What makes her feel good are clean-cut American clothes with a youthful vitality: At a fund-raiser I cohosted in New York last year, she showed up in a tunic and palazzo pants by Isabel Toledo (who also designed the lemongrass ensemble she wore to the swearing-in ceremony), with a necklace by Tom Binns. The day of our interview at the Hay-Adams, she wears a soft, silk-crepe accordion-pleat dress by 34-year-old Thakoon Panichgul; Jason Wu, who designed her Inaugural ball dress, is only 26.

Mrs. Obama’s lithe frame — an uncommon figure for an American First Lady, let’s be honest — and her ardent championing of new names in American design have induced many to describe her as a potential “new Jackie Kennedy.” But that really isn’t her. Pragmatism, not glamour, is what matters when she gets dressed.

There hasn’t been any information on the new photographer or designer she’ll be wearing, but I’m sure it won’t be Vivienne Westwood.

If you had to choose, which designer would you like to see Michelle in?
