Nicole Beharie Says She Wasn’t Invited to Do DVD Commentary for Sleepy Hollow

Instagram was a buzz when Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie posted a telling Instagram of what’s been going on behind the scenes of the show:

Apparently, a DVD set is being released soon with behind the scenes commentary and Beharie was not invited. How is that even possible when she’s one of the main stars? Nothing like Hollywood to push out the black woman.

If you’re a fan of the show, you may have noticed that Beharie’s role has become more marginalized. Fans have complained about her recent storylines and the fact that she’s being downplayed, while other female stars are now receiving all of the shine. One has to wonder (or even assume) that it’s about race.

Also, after snooping around on the internet, it seems as though Orlando Jones isn’t doing DVD commentary either.

From Tumblr:

What are we to make of that? If I understand correctly the only ones which are giving commentary to that pathetically disasterous S2 are, Mison, Noble, Winters, quick find another Caucasian, as that is the only qualification.

But now that it’s out that Beharie isn’t being included, her fans and even fellow actress Anika Noni Rose are having their say:

The sad thing about the situation is that it proves once again, Hollywood isn’t kind to ‘black’ Hollywood.

Well this is a shame… and here I thought strides were being made with this show and its attempts to be diverse… le sigh.

I don’t see a season 3 for this show. It is a wrap when not only fans are vocal, but the actors are vocal, critics and when the executives from the network had to step in and questioned the direction and production of the show so you know something rotten was afoot. I loved the first season but couldn’t make it through the second season because it was clear where the direction of the show wanted to head AND it wasn’t in favor of Nicole beharie. But I am not surprised, as mentioned this happened to Taraji Henson on POI, the ABC Family show Twisted with the young black actress and has been happening to Kat Graham on Vampire Dairies. IT always seem like when a show has a cult following or weaved its way into pop culture where the leads are nonwhite or the secondary nonwhite casts are popular TPTB finds some way to reel it in by deterring it or messing it up where it’s not the same anymore and you lose interest. As the saying goes the more things change the more they stay the same. But the plus side is when SH is canceled I have no doubt that Nicole will bounce back. I am so tired of Hollywood using the black audience for ratings but want to treat us and black actors/actresses like crap but still want us to be grateful they threw us scraps.

The same people saying Nicole should be “grateful” (even though she has YET to publicly say anything negative about the show itself) are probably the same demographic who blamed Shonda Rhimes when Katherine Heigl made all those negative comments about Grey’s Anatomy. Yep, there were online comments saying Shonda should have been happy heigl was on the show, etc., Shonda was “bitter” (!) because they think heigl is beautiful, etc. And now, Nicole is not even supposed to address the fact that she was blatantly omitted here. It’s another way of saying uppity, and they are too chicken ish to admit that.

I swear there are so many caucasians who honestly believe the only reason Black people are on Earth is for them to blame their insecurities on. Here is to wishing Nicole gets the last laugh like Taraji has done.

So I guess they are going to punish her in some shape or form now. SMH All I can say is that I hope that Shonda Rhimes writes a starring vehicle for Nicole. Shonda is one of the small number of people in Hollywood with actual power who knows how to treat Black actresses.

We are still living in times where Black actresses are supposed to be thankful for crumbs off the table, and Michelle Rodriguez is probably writing a blog post now on how some other actress will go hungry because Nicole Beharie is taking up all of the roles on the Fox network.

She and Orlando Jones and the other actress who portrays the sister. I was watching for the black folks and trying to stay loyal. But the show has started to go downhill and i am losing interest. I was glad they got rid of that annoying Katrina story, I like Abby and Ichabod they have good chemistry and make a good team. But the show is just all over the place and i’m getting bored.

The show used to be so good, but it has been really struggling. The last two episodes were the best, but I don’t think Fox has even made a determination on whether it will bring the show back next season, so she should just find a new gig. She’s extremely talented and I know it won’t be hard.

The FOX execs were saying they were going to wait until May to announce if they renewed it or not. That doesn’t sound too promising to me.

Taraji P. Henson had simular complaints at the start of the promotion of her show “Person of Interest”.

That is indeed interesting because everyone that I know (and many critiques that I have read) have been praying that the Katrina character be killed off.

That happened on the season finally. We take one step forward, and 30 back. SMH

that’s the same tune they sing every single time a black person looks out for their own best interest before the interest of their white employer/colleague/ally/friend/neighbor/stranger. “ungrateful” is code for “don’t forget that casting you in this role was nothing more than charity in the first place so stay in your lane & be glad your paycheck ain’t bouncing b/c we only need you for ratings boosts”

Pretty much. The producers are full of themselves if they think the show would be the same or even as popular without Nicole.

The ratings have already gone down thanks to them pushing the POC aside for the Crane family drama.

Chile, I want them to itemize what she should be grateful for? A reduced role on a fantasy show? It sounds like her costar Tom is completely in her corner, but his power is probably very limited, unless he is a producer on the show. It’s amazing that this stuff is still so obvious. What are they punishing her for, and why do people rush to punish Black people in some way, shape or form all of the time?

We may be off the physical plantation, but the evil spirit of punishment is still alive and well.

Remember when Person Of Interest was featured on the cover of TV Guide, however, Taraji P. Henson was not included on the cover with her cast mates even though she was the LEAD detective on the show? She went on social media to let us know how she felt about it. Yall remember that? This situation seems very familiar. Damn shame when a lead actress on a show has to go on social media and call out their employer. I will definitely let the show know how I feel & I hope those of you that watch will do the same.

You read my mind. I immediately thought of Taraji. They killed her character off the show shortly thereafter. I remember her doing interviews saying that she always knew here character’s run on “Person of Interest” was limited, but I keep wondering if they cut her time short for being outspoken. America always has (and continues to have) an issue with outspoken Black people.

Season 2 was trash and they should be happy people still attempted to watch. I only still watched because i was hoping they would expand on her and hey sisters story but instead it stagnated.

Right?!?! They started with the story about their mother (probably the highlight of the beginning of the season) and then just
stopped and tried to ram Katrina down our throats for the rest of
      the season. Ugh!

The storyline with them seeing something in the woods and her sister being institutionalized as a result was really going somewhere. It’s sad that they made changes in the direction of the show.

I thought I was the only one who noticed the plummet in quality. I guess with “Scandal”, “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Grey’s Anatomy” airing and doing very well, the old boy’s network in Hollywood has decided that the “pretty and talented Black girl” quota has been met. Meanwhile, every other network could be called non Black entertainment.
