Ursula M. Burns- A Black Woman Making History In The Corporate World

Can you imagine walking into a major corporation at the age of 19 during the first day of your internship? Imagine sweaty palms, nervousness, coupled with excitement. Now imagine, 30 years later, you’re still with that corporation, but now you’re the first African-American female Chief Executive Officer of one of the nations largest publicly traded corporations.
Welcome to Ursula M. Burns’ life, this week’s spotlight in Women’s History Month.
In 1980, Ursula was that young college student, walking into Xerox for a summer internship, and in July 2009, she became their CEO.  Not only is she the CEO of Xerox, this past November, Ms. Burns’ was  named by President Barack Obama to help lead the Read more [...]

St. Thomas Bound

On Sunday, I’m leaving the DMV area, for the beautiful island of St. Thomas for a few days! I am definitely in need of a much needed break from the monotony that has become my life. I’m definitely in need of a change, and although this trip is only for a few days, it’s definitely going to be quite interesting, to say the least. I’m definitely looking forward to the white beaches & crytal clear water and catching up with an old friend from high school!  In any event, I doubt I’ll have time to update the blog anytime soon, but feel free to follow me on twitter, I’m sure there will be a lot of twitpics and other randomness about my trip posted there! Thank You For Googling!

I find it quite amusing that within the past couple of months, well since approximately  November  15th 2008, the hits that I’ve received from people googling a certain string of words has practically quadrupled.  Before that time it was a rare occurrence for these three words to be googled and for them to actually lead someone to my page. Being the  nerd that I am, I make use of not just one statistic tracking add-on, but of three. One is visible on my site, the other two are not.
Since November 16th, 2008, I’ve also made use of my IP Deny Manager, even more frequently. Considering I knew, where & why these people were googling this certain string, I didn’t care to have their traffic Read more [...]

They're Just Arms, Not Breasts!

I don’t get the hoopla over Michelle Obama going sleeveless and showing off her nicely sculpted arms.

Last month, USA Today ran a poll, and guess what it was about? Michelle Obama’s arms! You’d think they’d have a few other news worthy items to write about, but here are the results:
Is it appropriate for Michelle Obama to go sleeveless so often?
40%: Yes, she’s a modern first lady.
11%: No, it seems too informal.
49%: Who cares? It’s her decision.
I think Michelle Obama is quite a fashionable woman, and dresses very tasteful. I think people are so used to  Barbara Bush & Hilary Clinton’s lack of fashion sense, and the fact that they both dressed like retired gym teachers, to appreciate Read more [...]

Being Chased By Miss Jane Pittman

This morning at around 5:30 a.m, I woke up on the floor, between my night stand and my bed. Yeah, get a good visual, it’s worth a laugh or two or three.  So anyways, I was in the midst of having a dream, I’ve was being chased by Miss Jane Pittman.
Yes, that, Miss Jane Pittman!

The funny thing about it, she wasn’t fully ‘old’, just her face & her feet! She was half Benjamin Button, half Flo Jo! All I can remember her saying was, “I”m going to get you fung’ke!”. As I was running away from Miss Jane Pittman,  I noticed that the pavement was ending and there was a huge gap between the next piece of pavement. Talk about chasing pavements literally! I knew I had to jump, if I was going Read more [...]

Ranting & Raving, B*tching & Complaining

This morning and my drive into work I looked at the car besides me and noticed a personalized license plate that looked so familiar, then I realized it was my friend Single Black Male. I went through the names on my cell and dialed him up. We chatted for a few since it’s been some time since we’ve spoken to each other. So we talked about the bullshit that’s been going on in my life in particular and just laughed at how pathetic certain people can be. After that conversation, the only thing that was on my mind as I walked into my office was a rant & rave post. It’s been a while since I’ve done one, so needless to say I have a little bit to get off my chest.

I truly hope the person Read more [...]

Friday Asides

I had a weird dream last night. It basically involved me leaving for my business trip that I’m going on next week, but I left all my ‘business’ stuff at home. No laptop, no suits, no dress shoes. It was just me in Orlando with flip flops and a bathing suit. I guess I need to continue to tell myself that this IS a business trip, and not a trip to Disney World after all. I’m actually not looking forward to the trip, I have too many things to do to get prepared. But anyways, here are my ‘asides’ (not really rants/raves, just things I didn’t want to dedicate a whole blog post to).

In less than 26 days, McCain will finally go away! I’m tired of seeing his little arms sway back and forth on Read more [...]

Friday Asides: I Need A Break, A Drink & A Salon!

I need a drink. Possibly 3 or 4. Vodka w/ pineapple or cranberry juice are my drinks of choice. I don’t sip, I just usually swallow them down in a few gulps. My tolerance has dwindled a bit, I guess considering that I do come from an Irish background, some family members would say that’s nothing to brag about. I’m considered the light weight of my family when it comes to drinking, and I’ll wear that title proudly. I don’t want to end up like my brother who has to blow into a machine to start his car. So the number #1 thing on my agenda this weekend is definitely to treat myself to some adult beverages and relax, especially after attending my assistant’s daughter’s birthday party Saturday afternoon Read more [...]

Friday Asides: Maxwell

I woke up this morning in a grumpy mood. I’m not quite sure why because I actually managed to get in a good night’s sleep without any interruptions. No cell phone ringing from late night phone calls or text messages, no tossing and turning, no jumping up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I actually managed to get a whole 8 hrs. It’s been one of those mornings where I just can’t get into the swing of things.
Maxwell tickets went on sale today for his performance at Constitution Hall! If there was one singer who I could describe as being ‘orgasmic’, he would definitely be the one!  His live cd is always in constant rotation in my car, usually when I’m in a ‘slump’ all I have to Read more [...]

Friday Asides Pt. 4: Sharing is Caring

Yesterday I received several new websites from everyone in regards to adding to my procrastination and I want to thank all of you! I’ve definitely discovered a lot of new favorites! So with that said, I’ll share some of my own as well.
One of my favorite reads in the blogosphere has always been “The Field-Negro” and yesterday while I was reading his blog, I came across this post, “Sarah Get Your Gun”, in reference to Sarah Palin and her pregnant teen daughter. It is definitely read worthy, so go ahead and click away.
I mentioned a few posts back that I was offered a bi-weekly editorial column and it went live this week! Mahogany Butterfly has always been one of my favorite websites that cater Read more [...]

Friday Asides Part 3

Another Friday is upon us, and thankfully this is a long weekend. I can’t believe the summer has came and went so fast. It seems like it was only a couple of weeks ago that it was Memorial Day. For me this summer seems as though it went by in a blur. I didn’t travel as much as I would have liked to, for business or pleasure. I guess one highlight of my summer was my business trip to San Diego. Talk about perfect weather every day!
This summer was definitely one of the  most stressful. Between relationship, family and health issues, my spirit was definitely broken in more ways than one. Now that the summer has drawn to a close, I can definitely see the silver lining in the clouds. I’ve gotten Read more [...]
